This session introduces the concepts of smart integrated buildings and their technology, architecture, and design engineering requirements. Smart buildings have three key foundational elements: They use distributed embedded controllers, communicate using a common infrastructure, and have multiple integrated sub-systems managed from a common workstation environment. This model follows the latest best practices when designing a building automation and management system and provides the owner a model where each piece of the puzzle can be sourced and integrated into a common whole. It allows the owner to “own” their systems, provide a growth path, and reduce the reliance on proprietary system elements; all leading to more open, interoperable solutions.
